Ithaca: Our home

·         Events in Ithaca.  This website, while not the easiest to navigate, has the best listing of current happenings in the area

·         Visit Ithaca.  If you want to see what it looks like here or are planning on visiting us, stop by this website first.

Environmentalism: Both Charlotte and Govind believe that in order to have a sustainable world, where everyone, not just those in rich countries, can live with the basics of a high standard of living.  The current environmental situation is unacceptable.  Some of these organizations are, in their own way, leading the fight to make this world a better place for all of Earth's creatures.

·         Cayuga Lake Watershed Network.  This organization works to coordinate the environmental efforts that are occurring around Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes Region of New York, our new home!

·         Cayuga Bird Club  A group of very dedicated birdwatchers in the Finger Lakes Region of New York.  Many have a connection with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

·         Finger Lakes Native Plant Society A fun group to hang out with.  Take a walk with them and learn about the flora in this neck of the woods.

·         Friends of Six Mile Creek.  For a group founded in 2003, this group has it going on!  They have tapped into local volunteers to improve the Six Mile Creek Natural Area.  I love pulling garlic mustard with them.  Their website is small because it’s new, but it’ll give you all the contact info you’ll need.

·         Friends of Sausal Creek.  The organization, that Charlotte helped to run, works on creek restoration in the City of Oakland.  The creek itself runs from the Oakland Hills to the Fruitvale Bridge just by the Fruitvale BART station.  It runs through one of the most diverse communities in the United States.

·         Friends of the Earth. This is probably the most forceful of mainstream environmental organizations.  They mainly work on issues surrounding policy issues in Washington, rather than more local work.

·         Invasive.org.  This website will tell you all you need to know about invasive plants in your area

·         Sierra Club.  The best known of the mainstream environmental organizations.  They work on a combination of local environmental awareness and policy issues at the state and US government level.

·         Cornell Department of Natural Resource.  One of the most renowned programs in natural resources involves itself in the local and the global problems of today.

Human Rights: Without social justice and civil rights, where will we be today?  We will live in a world where certain groups suffer the indignity of riding in the back of the bus; certain people will live in slavery or bonded to their jobs based on their parentage; certain people will suffer because they speak out against a government; and certain people would die because their "government" believes they are not worth living for.  We disagree and here are some people that share our views.

·         Govind's South Asia Human Rights Page: A growing compendium of literature on the most diverse regions of the world.

·         Amnesty International.  The world's largest grassroots organization dedicated to human rights.  This is the link to the International Secretariat, which is based in London.  If you want a link to the press statements issued by the organization, click here

·         Amnesty International USA.  The US section of AI is the organization with which Govind and Charlotte both spend considerable amounts of time volunteering.  Our local group is Ithaca Group #73.

·         Amnesty International India.  A small, but thriving section of AI.

·         Human Rights Watch.  Another well-known human rights organization which concentrates on policy and research (contrasted with AI which does campaigning and research).  They do fabulous work.

·         United Nations High Commission for Human Rights.  The UN's body that oversees human rights and argues on behalf of people who are oppressed by the governments that are supposed to be protecting them.

·         Human Rights Internet.  A Canadian-based consortium which attempts to act as a gateway to human rights information throughout the world.

Vegetarianism: Charlotte and I are both vegetarian.  We're not as ethical in our diet when it comes to eggs and milk, but we avoid killing animals when we eat.  And, we eat just fine (except for the multitude of junk food that Govind eats).  Here are some sites that reflects our views.

·         Vegetarian Resource Group

·         Farm Fresh to You.  A company who delivers fresh organic fruits and vegetables to your door.  Also has lots of recipes categorized by fruit/vegetable.  Not vegetarian only recipes, but lots of good ones nonetheless.

·         Farm Sanctuary.  We went on a tour at their facility west of Watkins Glen, New York and got to spend some quality time with pigs enjoying their lives away from the factory farm.

News Media

·         BBC World Service: undoubtedly the best mainstream source of news around.  I would never recommend any US TV network because of its corporate tilt that benefits only those in power (Democrat or Republican), but I would recommend the BBC.

·         The Economist.  Despite President Bush’s off economic policies (which will hurt capitalism in the long term because of his pro-rich policies), The Economist is slavishly loyal to him.  They are, however, progressive on social issues.

·         AlterNet:  a good compendium of news sources.

·         Salon: a great, but struggling webzine.

·         American Prospect: a fabulous magazine with links to a lot of their articles.

·         The Nation: one of the oldest progressive magazines has seen better days.

·         Indian Express: One of the many highly critical and excellent Indian English-language newspapers.

Miscellaneous

·         The Onion: I debated long and hard as to whether this should be in the news media section.  The stuff they do is funny, but it's almost as true as some of the mainstream media!

·         Asahi Business in Japan, oddly enough, has the best place we’ve found so far to find the “We are the World” video from 1984.

People We Know

·         James Maclean, fellow former MA student at SF State.

·         Hilary Naylor, an AIUSA activist in Oakland.

·         Mary Shaw, an AIUSA activist in Philadelphia.

·         Marc Bellemare, a fellow PhD student at Cornell.

·         Andy Doyle, a.k.a, the slamTractor, in Ithaca.

·         Nancy Winemiller.  A yummy website indeed—100% vegan!
